What to see in Plovdiv

 THE ROMAN STADIUM

The Roman Stadium was built in the first century BC and modelled after the stadium in Delphi. In antiquity, the Roman Stadium could accommodate 30 thousand people. The northern section of the stadium with 14 rows of marble seats, the vaulted northers entrance and part of the racing track are preserved today.

 

 

 

ANCIENT THEATRE - THE ROMAN FORUM

It was built in the aerly second century. It is one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in the world. Inscriptions and exquisite statue are incorporated into the architecture of the building. It has been adapted for Plovdiv's modern cultural life and hosts.

 

 

 

DZHUMAYA MOSQUE

One of the oldest Ottoman religious buildings on the Balkan Peninsula - built between 14th and 16th centuries. Dzhumaya Mosque is the second largest active Muslim religious centre in Bulgaria. In the nineteenthe century, a wooden building for public use - currently a library was built in its north side. 

THE CITY ART GALLERY

The gallery's permanent exhibit is housed in the building of the first Bulgarian Revival Era school in the city - Sts. Cyril and Methodius where, in 1857, for the first time in the country, the deeds of the two educators were commemorated. The gallery owns a total of five houses for its expositions. 

 

 

 

HISAR KAPIA - THE EASTERN GATE OF THE PHILIPPOPOLIS FORTRESS

This historic architectural ensemble is one of the symbols of the city. The gate has existed on this site since ancient times. Below the level of the present-day pavement, the foundation date back to the Roman period, probably from the second century. 

 

 

 

BALABANOVA HOUSE

Balabanova house covers an area of 546 sq.m. It was errected at the beginning of 19th century, but during 1930s it was raized to the ground. After four decades it was restored. Today the first floor of the house contains a permanent exhibit of contemporary Bulgarian art. The second floor, which preserves a picture of urban Revival Era life via furnitures, is a popular stage for small cultural events.

 

 

 

NEBET TEPE ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX

Nebet Tepe is the historical cause for the emergence of present-day Plovdiv. Remnants of the first prehistoric settlement on the Three Hills are located here. In the 12th century BC it grew into the Thracian city of Eumolpia - one of the first cities in Southeastern Europe.
